Photos recently added to NH species galleries, set #141. All specimens in this update set came from a single tennis ball-sized rock found in a tub of phosphate samples gifted by Bob Whitmore. | |
Species: SIDERITE with Strunzite Locality: Palermo #1 Mine, N. Groton, NH Specimen Size: 4 mm field of view. Field Collected: From a tub of Palermo phosphate rocks gifted by Bob Whitmore Catalog No.: u2380 Notes: |
Species: SIDERITE with Quartz & Strunzite Locality: Palermo #1 Mine, N. Groton, NH Specimen Size: 6 mm siderite crystal with clear quartz crystal in center Field Collected: From a tub of Palermo phosphate rocks gifted by Bob Whitmore Catalog No.: u2381 Notes: From a 160 image stack. |
Species: SIDERITE Locality: Palermo Mine, N. Groton, NH Specimen Size: 0.7 mm field of view. Black siderite scalehedron. Field Collected: From a tub of Palermo rocks gifted by Bob Whitmore Catalog No.: u2390 Notes: Best guess on the white acicular mineral is strunzite. |
Species: STRUNZITE Locality: Palermo Mine, N. Groton, NH Specimen Size: 0.45 mm field of view. Field Collected: From a tub of Palermo rocks gifted by Bob Whitmore Catalog No.: u2390 Notes: |
Species: UNKNOWN, DJURLITE ? Locality: Palermo Mine, N. Groton, NH Specimen Size: 1.5 mm field of view. Field Collected: From a tub of Palermo rocks gifted by Bob Whitmore Catalog No.: u2387 Notes:Very dark-blue mass of dendritic crystals. Appears to be post-mining growth. There is much chalcopyrite on this specimen including directly beneath this mass, so some secondary copper mineral is suspected. Janet Cares reported djurleite, Cu31S16 ,from Palermo. |
Species: BORNITE ?, DJURLITE ? Locality: Palermo #1 Mine, N. Groton, NH Specimen Size: 0.7 mm mass of blue-black bornite Field Collected: From a tub of Palermo phosphate rocks gifted by Bob Whitmore Catalog No.: u2403 Notes: From a 50 image stack. |
Species: CHILDRENITE ? Locality: Palermo Mine, N. Groton, NH Specimen Size: 0.4 mm field of view. Field Collected: From a tub of Palermo rocks gifted by Bob Whitmore Catalog No.: u2386 Notes: Best guess on this white acicular mineral is childrenite. Presently labeled as hydroxylapatite. |
Species: PSEUDOMALACHITE Locality: Palermo Mine, N. Groton, NH Specimen Size: 5 mm field of view. Green pseudomalachite crust on milky quartz Field Collected: From a tub of Palermo rocks gifted by Bob Whitmore Catalog No.: u2393 Notes: A blob of chalcopyrite is in the lower left; the likely source of copper for the pseudomalachite. |
Species: CHALCOPYRITE Locality: Palermo Mine, N. Groton, NH Specimen Size: 2 mm field of view. Chalcopyrite with bornite film coating. Field Collected: From a tub of Palermo rocks gifted by Bob Whitmore Catalog No.: u2393 Notes: |
Species: CHILDRENITE Locality: Palermo Mine, N. Groton, NH Specimen Size: 2.6 mm childrenite crystal Field Collected: From a tub of Palermo rocks gifted by Bob Whitmore Catalog No.: u2388 Notes: |
Species: HYDROXYLAPATITE Locality: Palermo Mine, N. Groton, NH Specimen Size: 1.8 mm tall columnar cluster of milky apatite crystals. Field Collected: From a tub of Palermo rocks gifted by Bob Whitmore Catalog No.: u2391 Notes: My [tm] EDS experience has been that most Palermo white to milky apatite crystals are hydroxylapatite. However visually distinguishing different apatite species is risky. |
Species: UNKNOWN Locality: Palermo #1 Mine, N. Groton, NH Specimen Size: 0.7 mm cluster brown, furry, balls on cream-colored siderite Field Collected: From a tub of Palermo phosphate rocks gifted by Bob Whitmore Catalog No.: u2400 Notes: One possible ID is goethite. |
Species: CACOXENITE on Goethite Locality: Palermo #1 Mine, N. Groton, NH Specimen Size: 0.6 mm field of view Field Collected: From a tub of Palermo phosphate rocks gifted by Bob Whitmore Catalog No.: u2399 Notes: |
Species: CACOXENITE on Goethite Locality: Palermo #1 Mine, N. Groton, NH Specimen Size: 1.1 mm field of view and 0.6 mm zom view. Field Collected: From a tub of Palermo phosphate rocks gifted by Bob Whitmore Catalog No.: u2395 Notes: This Palermo cacoxenite compares very favorably with many cacoxenite photos on mindat.org. |
Species: CACOXENITE on Goethite Locality: Palermo #1 Mine, N. Groton, NH Specimen Size: 2.6 mm field of view Field Collected: From a tub of Palermo phosphate rocks gifted by Bob Whitmore Catalog No.: u2407 Notes: |
Species: CACOXENITE Locality: Palermo #1 Mine, N. Groton, NH Specimen Size: 0.5 mm field of view Field Collected: From a tub of Palermo phosphate rocks gifted by Bob Whitmore Catalog No.: u2407 Notes: |
Species: CACOXENITE Locality: Palermo #1 Mine, N. Groton, NH Specimen Size: 0.7 mm field of view Field Collected: From a tub of Palermo phosphate rocks gifted by Bob Whitmore Catalog No.: u2402 Notes: The pre-breakdown specimen that hosted these cacoxenites had a moderate amount of chalcopyrite. Some of the chalcopyrite was altered to this blue-black mineral here, (perhaps bornite). Cacoxenite is rare at Palermo. I wonder if the chalcopyrite enables the favorability of cacoxenite formation. |
Species: KULANITE-BJAREBYITE Locality: Palermo #1 Mine, N. Groton, NH Specimen Size: 1.1 mm glassy green crystal Field Collected: From a tub of Palermo phosphate rocks gifted by Bob Whitmore Catalog No.: u2383 Notes: Kulanite - Bjarebyite form a Mn-Fe series. A chemical analysis is required for differentiation per Whitmore & Lawrence's book The Pegmatite Mines Known as Palermo. |
Species: UNKNOWN Locality: Palermo #1 Mine, N. Groton, NH Specimen Size: 0.8 mm field of view Field Collected: From a tub of Palermo phosphate rocks gifted by Bob Whitmore Catalog No.: u2397 Notes: From the rock chunk with cacoxenite. |
